Психологическая линия Апологии: почему человек не видит своего состояния. Два
механизма — развлечение (отвлечь взгляд) и себялюбие (исказить его) — держат
человека в неведении о себе.

1. Покой невыносим — человек чувствует своё ничтожество — divertissement

   Nothing is so insufferable to man as to be completely at rest, without passions, without business, without diversion, without study. He then feels his nothingness

2. Отсюда — бегство: не могут оставаться наедине с собой — divertissement

   all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own chamber.

3. Ищут не добычу, а охоту — сам шум, отвлекающий от мысли — divertissement

   They do not know that it is the chase, and not the quarry, which they seek.

4. А когда взгляд всё же падает на себя — «я» его искажает — amour-propre

   He wants to be great, and he sees himself small. He wants to be happy, and he sees himself miserable.

5. Отсюда вражда к обличающей правде — amour-propre

   he conceives a mortal enmity against that truth which reproves him, and which convinces him of his faults.

6. Итог: человек — маска и ложь для себя и других — amour-propre

   Man is then only disguise, falsehood, and hypocrisy, both in himself and in regard to others.
