Развлечение (divertissement)

Центральный диагноз человеческого несчастья: всё оно происходит из одного —
человек не умеет спокойно оставаться в своей комнате («they cannot stay quietly
in their own chamber»). Развлечение (divertissement) — это не безделье, а
бегство от мысли о себе: о смерти, ничтожестве, скуке. Мы ищем не зайца, а
охоту — не добычу, а «the bustle which averts these thoughts of ours».
Парадокс: развлечение — единственное, что нас утешает, и одновременно
величайшее из наших несчастий, потому что оно мешает нам задуматься и
незаметно ведёт к гибели. Даже король несчастен, если оставить его наедине с
собой без развлечения.
