Автомат и убеждение (l'automate)

Психология веры у Паскаля двусоставна: человек «as much automatic as
intellectual». Убеждают не одни доказательства — «Proofs only convince the
mind», а рядом с умом есть «автомат» (тело, привычка, страсти), который надо
склонить отдельно. Доказательства медленны, требуют держать все начала в уме,
и разум «at every hour it falls asleep»; чувство и привычка действуют мгновенно
и всегда готовы. Поэтому вера требует, чтобы поверили обе части: ум — доводом,
который довольно увидеть раз в жизни, автомат — привычкой. Это ключ к pari:
знаменитый совет «действуй, как если бы верил» — не лицемерие, а работа с
автоматом, единственный доступ туда, куда доказательство не дотягивается.
