Образ, в котором сходятся nichtozhestvo-i-velichie и dva-beskonechnykh.
Человек — тростник, самое слабое в природе: капли воды довольно, чтобы его убить.
Но это мыслящий тростник, и если бы вселенная его раздавила, он был бы
благороднее убийцы — потому что знает, что умирает, а вселенная не знает
ничего. Достоинство человека, следовательно, не в пространстве (которого ему не
заполнить), а в мысли: «All our dignity consists, then, in thought.». Отсюда
этический вывод, не мотивационный лозунг: «Let us endeavour, then, to think
well; this is the principle of morality.» Достоинство добывается управлением
мыслью, а не обладанием мирами.
