Ничтожество и величие человека (misère et grandeur)

Ключевая структура антропологии Паскаля: человек одновременно ничтожен и
велик, и одно доказывается другим. Он «What a chimera then is man! ... Judge
of all things, imbecile worm of the earth; depositary of truth, a sink of
uncertainty and error; the pride and refuse of the universe!». Величие — в том,
что он знает своё ничтожество: дерево не знает, что оно жалко. Ни один из
полюсов по отдельности не верен: кто видит только величие — впадает в гордыню
философов; кто только ничтожество — в отчаяние атеистов. Разрешает противоречие
не разум, а «Учитель»: истина о падении (величие утрачено, ничтожество
приобретено) объясняет узел, который иначе неразрешим. Отсюда правило: не
возвышать человека и не унижать, а держать оба полюса вместе.
