Сокрытый бог (Deus absconditus)

Против «естественного богословия»: Паскаль отвергает доказательства бытия Бога
из устройства природы как обращённые к неверующим — они дают лишь повод к
презрению («nothing is more calculated to arouse their contempt»). Писание, по
Паскалю, говорит обратное: Бог сокрыт («God is a hidden God», Vere tu es Deus
absconditus). Мир устроен так, что не даёт ни полного доказательства, ни полного
отрицания: «All appearance indicates neither a total exclusion nor a manifest
presence of divinity, but the presence of a God who hides Himself.» Эта
сокрытость — не дефект, а условие: Бог открывается ищущим и скрывается от
искушающих, потому что человек и недостоин Бога, и способен к нему. Именно
сокрытость делает необходимым pari: будь Бог очевиден, ставка была бы не
нужна.

He must not see nothing at all, nor must he see sufficient for him to believe he possesses it; but he must see enough to know that he has lost it.

  • pari — сокрытость Бога — прямая предпосылка пари: разум «ничего не решает» именно потому, что Бог не очевиден.
  • serdtse-i-razum — сокрытого Бога «чувствуют сердцем, а не разумом»; естественные доказательства бьют мимо.
